We suggest stocking the bream, minnows and catfish beginning in
September until May and adding the bass beginning in June.
Hardins Fish began supplying game fish for stocking in 1981. Our experience with fish extends back to 1954 when my Father, Charles M. Hardin increased an 8 acre fishing and swimming lake to a 20 acre lake and then stocked it with red fin minnows. These minnows were sold to bait shops around the Grenada Lake area.
The financial returns were very good for the business, so daddy started adding lakes to the farm. In the early 1960’s, channel catfish, mainly fingerlings were produced for sale. Our experiences have been varied and many over these last 57 years.
For the enjoyment you seek and for the investment you will be making, we feel our years of experience and the knowledge we have gained gives us an advantage to help you organize your stocking rates to suit the needs for your new or existing lake.
Several sizes are available for most species as follows:
Coppernose bluegill bream,
Native bluegill bream
Redear (shellcracker) bream,
Channel catfish,
F1 largemouth black bass,
Florida largemouth black bass,
Largemouth black bass,
Grass carp (white amur),
Black crappie.
Forage fish are also offered as follows:
Tuffie (fathead) minnow
Golden shiner minnow
One of the older general stocking recommendations per acre is as follows:
350 bluegill
150 redear
50 bass
50 catfish
500 tuffie minnow
As you see above, we do not stock the hybrid bream. There are two reasons for this: the first being that they reproduce within a few months and revert back to green sunfish, or pond perch, which are only good for fish bait on trout lines or throw lines for catfish. The second reason is where bass are stocked, the hybrid bream will not offer a good food source for the bass for forage. Because the offspring of the hybrid bream do not move as fast as the bluegill bream, more will be eaten by the bass.
Other suppliers, mainly long haul fish trucks who run routes to coop’s and feed stores, more than often offer the hybrid bream because it is a more hardy fish, which means they lose less fish on these long hauls. Stocking hybrid bream into ponds with existing fish populations is basically a waste of money. The hybrids will have to compete with the existing bream population for food, which means that they will not grow very quickly.
In addition, bass may eat the hybrid fingerlings that you stock. Because of the reasons stated above, we feel the bream we offer will bring you a better return for your investment and ultimately more enjoyment.
We have delivery available for most orders or fish can be picked up at our fish shed on the farm.
